Falls Memorial Hospital employees give back to purchase new equipment that benefits newborns.
International Falls, MN (December 2, 2008) — Falls Memorial Hospital has a new piece of equipment that benefits its smallest patients; the “neoBlue cozy” is an LED phototherapy system that helps infants who have jaundice, a common condition in newborns that refers to the yellow color of the skin and whites of the eyes caused by excess bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is produced by the normal breakdown of red blood cells.
PRISMS (People Reflecting Inspiration. Spirit Motivating Success) is a group of hospital employees who support the hospital through their generous donations. This year, 78 percent of employees gave back to the hospital. “When I proudly mention this to other business leaders in the community, they are truly amazed at the generosity that is second nature to us here,” says Bonnie Erickson, FMH Interim Chief Executive Officer.
“As a clinician, I am very excited to be able to offer this new equipment to the families of our community,” says Mary Servis, FMH Chief Nursing Officer. “The neoBlue cozy system is an advancement in phototherapy; compared to traditional bilirubin treatments, this is more comfortable – and, more importantly, safer – for babies.”
The neoBlue Cozy offers many benefits:
- It utilizes LEDs to emit blue light matching the wavelength at which bilirubin is broken down. Because LEDs emit no significant ultraviolet light, the risk for potential skin damage is reduced.
- The unique cradle design is more comfortable for infants, and it exposes them from head to toe, delivering phototherapy over a larger surface area than standard phototherapy blankets, pads or beds.
- The device automatically shuts off in the event of elevated surface temperature; a flashing indicator alerts healthcare staff to check for blocked air vents or an increase in ambient temperature.
- The portable, lightweight design allows the basinet to easily be used in mother’s room.
