Frequently Asked Questions
When should I call Nurse-On-Line?
You may call Nurse-On-Line at any time, but we recommend that if you have a regular family doctor, you call him or her first.
How long do I have to wait for an answer to my question?
Typically, you will speak directly with a nurse when you call the hotline. However, the Nurse-On-Line call center averages nearly 800 calls a day, so if there is an unusually high volume of calls, it may take up to an hour for a nurse to return your call.
Does Nurse-On-Line have access to mine or my loved one’s records?
Yes, if you are a patient within the SMDC Health System. The nurse will have access to your current SMDC records through an electronic health record system. The nurse can also consult with most departments’ physicians or the physician on call for the department if needed.
Can the nurse order lab tests, prescribe medications, or schedule appointments?
In some situations, nurses may order lab tests, refill some prescription medications, and order certain medications that have been approved by your physician. Examples of situations that may fit under these guidelines are sore throats, urinary tract infection symptoms, and “pink eye” symptoms. If the nurse determines you need to be seen by a doctor for an evaluation, he/she may be able to assist you in scheduling an appointment.
