Laboratory

Rainy Lake Medical Center’s laboratory provides on-site testing services in the areas of hematology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, therapeutic drug monitoring, microbiology, transfusion, immunology, coagulation, and molecular diagnostics.

We utilize the same state-of-the-art technology used at the best hospitals throughout the state—Sysmex XT-4000i and XP-300 for hematology, and Abbott Architect ci4100 for chemistry and immunology.

We also have coagulation testing available to monitor Coumadin and we stay up-to-date on the new anticoagulant medications as they come out.

Easily Accessible

At RLMC, we work closely with our patients who need chemotherapy or infusion therapy. We go directly to their rooms so they do not have to travel through the hospital and we provide their results quickly so they can begin their therapy quickly. We also deliver procedures to patients being seen in our connected clinic rooms so those needing lab work do not have to come to us.

Transfusion medicine

The laboratory healthcare team can quickly type, screen, and cross-match blood and have it ready for patients in about one hour, right here at our International Falls campus. We also have plasma available and can order platelets as needed. These procedures are all performed using the latest Ortho Clinical Diagnostics Gel technology.

Molecular Diagnostics

Molecular diagnostics are also performed here in our laboratory. BioFire FilmArray looks for 20–27 pathogens in stool, blood, and respiratory specimens, all within one hour. This method is 200 times more sensitive and it’s faster and more efficient (eliminates waiting 5–7 days for results).

Another molecular method is Alere i, which is used to diagnose strep throat and flu quickly—right here in the Borderland. Alere i provides 15-minute, accurate strep results. (This swift and accurate procedure eliminates 2-day strep results, which can allow germs to be spread as you wait.)

For tests not performed onsite, Rainy Lake Medical Center employs two approved reference laboratories: Sanford Reference Laboratories and Memorial Blood Centers of Minnesota.

All of the blood components transfused at Rainy Lake Medical Center are supplied by Memorial Blood Centers of Minnesota.

The Rainy Lake Medical Center laboratory is accredited by the Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA).

The laboratory is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
