Coumadin Clinic

Rainy Lake Medical Center is committed to offering a wide range of treatment options in International Falls. This is demonstrated in the services to promote optimal health and wellness for patients in the Coumadin Clinic department.

For patients needing education or care with their Coumadin treatment regimen, Angela Noyes, Rainy Lake Clinic’s population health nurse, provides information and support.
Individual appointments are designed to discover what each patient needs to learn regarding their Coumadin treatment.

Information provided includes:

  • What is Coumadin for?
  • Why is it necessary to take Coumadin?
  • How does Coumadin affect the body?
  • What are signs and symptoms of an increase or decrease in INR levels? (INR measures how long it takes blood to clot when using an oral anticoagulation, such as Coumadin.)
  • What foods, medications, and herbs could affect INR levels?
  • What concerns could a patient experience when taking Coumadin?

Patients are encouraged to bring family members to their appointments at the Coumadin department so they can ask questions as well as provide support to the patients.

Educational displays and posters serve as visual demonstrations to help patients understand the disease process and how Coumadin can help in treatment. Education materials and practice tools are also provided for patients to keep for long-term self-reference.

Throughout the course of their appointments, patients are encouraged to write down their questions to discuss at their next appointment or to call the nurse clinician whenever they have a more urgent concern.

The care provided at the Coumadin clinic at Rainy Lake Clinic is another example of community healthcare working for you.
