Electromyography (EMG)

Among the diagnostic services offered to our area patients, Rainy Lake Clinic also offers electromyography (EMG), which is a diagnostic procedure to assess the health of muscles and nerves.

The EMG procedure can reveal nerve dysfunction, muscle dysfunction, or problems with signal transmission between nerves and muscles. Electromyography assists with diagnosing common health concerns such as carpal tunnel syndrome, low back and neck pain, ulnar neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, and small fiber neuropathies.

During an EMG, electrodes—either needle electrodes or surface electrodes, depending on what is being measured—send and receive signals. The EMG translates this action into graphs and numerical values that are interpreted and, within minutes, the results/reports are available through the vendor (TeleEMG).

The EMG diagnostic procedure is offered monthly by outreach specialist,  Dr. David McKee of Northland Neurology in our Rainy Lake Clinic. Providing EMG at Rainy Lake Clinic means that patients needing this diagnostic procedure can have it performed here and not down the road. Providing access to the EMG procedure locally is more convenient for our patients and assists our medical professionals, across all departments, in diagnosing conditions and prescribing accurate treatments.
