Labor, delivery, and a full-time OB/GYN

Rainy Lake Medical Center is dedicated to providing the women and families of Koochiching County and the surrounding areas access to a higher level of care on a regular basis.

That is why we have added a full-time OB/GYN physician, Dr. Kimberly VerSteeg, to our healthcare staff. The addition of Dr. VerSteeg allows greater access to OB/GYN services right here in International Falls.

Obstetrician gynecologists are physicians with special knowledge, skills, and professional capabilities in the medical and surgical care of the female reproductive system and associated disorders. This distinguishes them from other physicians and enables them to serve both as consultants to other physicians and as primary physicians for women.

Dr. VerSteeg will manage labor and delivery and perform surgery, as well as see patients in the Rainy Lake Clinic. Plus, Dr. VerSteeg is a female gynecologist, which is preferred by some women. Having Dr. VerSteeg on our staff as a gynecologist and obstetrician is another example of how we listen and respond to the healthcare needs of area women.

Labor and Delivery

Rainy Lake Medical Center is a great place to have your baby. In addition to being close to home and having an obstetrician on staff, we offer a host of services to make your birth experience safe and comfortable:

  • Fetal monitors, x-ray, and ultrasound.
  • Full-service surgery department and 24-hour physician coverage for C-sections.
  • Spinal and epidural anesthesia
  • Professional nursing staff specially trained in childbirth and certified in neo-natal resuscitation.
  • New labor/delivery suite, plus newly redecorated, comfortable, private rooms.

Rainy Lake Medical Center offers a Family-Centered Model of Care, which means you stay in a private room throughout labor, delivery, and recovery (except when a Cesarean Section is required). RLMC staff also promotes and encourages Mother-Baby Care, which means your baby stays in your hospital room with you. This time spent together fosters early bonding and offers the opportunity for education by trained staff.

Our new, fully equipped labor and delivery suite has a private bath and jetted tub, and a sleeper sofa to accommodate a support person. Our private maternity rooms are equipped with comfortable furniture in a home-like setting and can quickly transform into a delivery room.

RLMC obstetrical care nurses are certified in Neonatal Resuscitation and have received specialized training in the care of mothers and babies. A personal care nurse will be with you throughout labor and postpartum to provide you and your baby the best care possible. While in the hospital, new moms enjoy nutritious meals from our Choice Menu. Our Family Pantry is available for juices and snacks for mom or her support person.

Rainy Lake Medical Center, in partnership with Koochiching County Health Department, offers free childbirth education classes that consist of three, two-hour sessions designed to prepare the expectant mom and her coach for a healthy and safe birth experience. Understanding the stages of labor and knowing what to expect throughout the process can ease fears, and learning relaxation techniques can make the experience more comfortable.

Childbirth Sessions are held quarterly:

January, April, July, and October

Mothers in any stage of their pregnancy and their coaches are invited to attend. Rainy Lake Medical Center, in partnership with the Koochiching County Health Department, also provides helpful online childbirth education links.

Mothers and their support are welcome to tour the hospital.

Preregistration: Mothers and their support are encouraged to preregister prior to the baby’s due date. Preregistering can ease stress and anxiety upon arriving at the hospital while in labor.
