Rainy Lake Medical Center officials this week announced the facility’s laboratory has met all the criteria for accreditation by COLA Inc., a leading national laboratory accreditor, whose program and standards enable clinical laboratories and staff to meet U.S. CLIA and other regulatory requirements.
“Accreditation is an effective way to demonstrate competence and excellence of the laboratory,” said RLMC Laboratory Director Kim Usery. “It moves to stimulate the maintenance and improvement of the quality, which leads to high standard of services for our patients.”
Through a mentoring approach using education to improve quality and patient safety, accreditation is given to laboratories that apply the highest standards of quality in day-to-day operations, demonstrate continued accuracy in the performance of proficiency testing, and pass a rigorous on-site laboratory survey.
Usery highlighted preparedness by staff and strong teamwork efforts.
“When our survey date approached this year, we did a mock inspection and were pleased to find that our records were very in order,” she said. “One of our strengths is that we have an experienced staff with defined responsibilities. When it comes to survey time, the teamwork really becomes apparent.”
RLMC has earned COLA Inc. accreditation to provide quality service to its patients. The accreditation is good for two years.
“We take the importance of our job very seriously,” Usery said. “There is a lot of continued work to ensure that we get the most accurate test results possible. This includes competencies, verifications, quality control studies, patient test assessment reviews, continued education, proficiency testing, and a lot of additional work behind the scenes. We don’t cut corners and a successful COLA survey and accreditation proves that.”
